Abstract

The implementation of autonomous robots for fire detection and suppression has become increasingly vital, particularly in critical infrastructures such as hospitals, where the need for efficient firefighting solutions is critical. However, many hospitals in the Philippines face challenges due to limited resources and outdated technologies. To address these issues, this study proposes an innovative solution: the Fire Detection, Alerting, and Quick Response robot system. By incorporating advanced technology such as the FT143 detector, network mapping, and GSM module with ATMEGA 2560, this system aims to provide precise fire detection, real time location identification, and efficient communication for firefighters via a web-based notification interface [1]. The primary goal is to significantly reduce response time and mitigate fire disasters, particularly in critical establishments like hospitals. The methodology involves designing and constructing a robot capable of promptly alerting responders upon fire detection and activating robot- based fire extinguishing mechanisms as a first response measure. This project represents a significant advancement in Fire Detection and Alarm System (FDAS) technology in the Philippines, offering a more integrated and technologically advanced approach to firefighting and emergency response in hospital settings. By implementing this system, the study seeks to enhance fire safety measures and improve emergency response capabilities, ultimately contributing to the protection of lives and infrastructure in the face of fire emergencies. The integration of autonomous robots in firefighting not only enhances the efficiency and effectiveness of response efforts but also addresses the challenges posed by limited resources and outdated technologies in critical infrastructures like hospitals, ensuring better protection and safety for all.

Abstract

This descriptive-correlational study assessed the impact of forensic ballistics laboratory activities on the instructional delivery for criminology students. The study involved 102 graduating students from Kapalong College of Agriculture, Sciences, and Technology (KCAST) in Davao del Norte and Kolehiyo ng Pantukan (KNP) in Davao de Oro, both located in Region XI. The laboratory activities included firearm identification, firearm comparison, fired bullets examination, and projectile examination, all of which are crucial components of forensic ballistics. The results showed that the implementation of these activities positively affected the students’ understanding and performance in forensic ballistics. Based on these findings, several recommendations were proposed to enhance instructional delivery. The study suggests incorporating more crime laboratory activities and using a variety of laboratory tools and chemicals for a comprehensive understanding. It also recommends grading these activities separately to provide a clearer assessment of student performance. The study highlights the need for instructional materials focused on measuring bore diameter and the use of magnification tools to assess firearm characteristics more effectively. In examining cartridge cases, the study suggests using instructional materials that provide basic knowledge and incorporating activities that focus on marks produced by the firearm. Additionally, the use of a comparison microscope is recommended to enhance accuracy. The examination of projectiles, the study recommends using a micrometer for precise measurements and comparing test bullets with standard ones to improve students’ skills in forensic ballistics. These recommendations aim to improve the overall instructional delivery in forensic ballistics education.

Dominic Institute of Science and Technology Inc.

Abstract

Proficiency in the English language is a fundamental skill that students are expected to acquire in school. However, it has been suggested that learning gaps among students may be linked to factors such as their socioeconomic status, peer influence, and limited access to resources. In response to a growing trend of failing students, this study was conducted to investigate and identify the factors influencing students’ performance in English. Data for the study was collected from two types of communities: rural and urban. A descriptive research method was employed to achieve the study’s objectives. The results revealed that urban students have greater access to learning resources compared to those in rural areas. Additionally, the data indicated that both teachers and peers play a significant role in shaping students’ performance in English, regardless of location. Furthermore, the findings showed that female students in both rural and urban settings tend to outperform their male counterparts, with the highest academic achievers being concentrated in urban areas. Based on these findings, the researchers concluded that male students generally perform worse in English, teachers should maintain fairness toward all students, and rural schools should be provided with more English-related resources.

Abstract

This study assessed the juvenile delinquency in terms of the following: Children below the age of criminal responsibility, Serious Crimes Committed by Children Who Are Exempt from Criminal Responsibility, Repetition of offenses, Exploitation of Children for Commission of Crimes, and Joint Parental Responsibility. Likewise, Barangay’s Prevention Practices in terms of Regular Monitoring of Children’s Activities, Implementation of Curfew Hours, Community- Based Rehabilitation Programs, Anti-Drug Campaigns, Provision of Livelihood Programs, Youth Leadership Training, Engagement in Sports and Recreational Activities, and Collaboration with Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) The data consistently highlights that juveniles are significantly influenced by their developmental stage and their environment, including peer pressure, family dynamics, and socio-economic conditions. The study stresses the importance of community-based strategies and collaboration with NGOs in addressing juvenile delinquency and supporting community development. The study reveals that there are no significant differences in perceptions of juvenile delinquency based on sex. While specific aspects of juvenile delinquency do not show significant differences across age groups, the overall perceptions do vary notably. The study finds no significant correlation between respondents’ perceptions of juvenile delinquency and their views on the barangay’s prevention practices. The researcher proposed the following recommendations: 1) Implementation of recruitment strategies to ensure that both males and females are equally represented. Additionally, program planners should consider gender- specific needs and barriers to participation, ensuring that interventions are accessible and relevant to all genders; 2) Develop and implement multifaceted juvenile intervention programs that address both prevention and rehabilitation. Programs should focus on the unique developmental needs of juveniles, including mental, emotional, and psychological support; 3) Strengthening collaborations with NGOs and other community-based organizations; 4) Keep the youth engaged in positive pursuits, it is important to expand and diversify the range of activities available; 5) Establishing organized sports leagues, investing in community sports facilities, and developing varied recreational programs can help in keeping children and adolescents occupied and away from negative influences; 6) Introducing cultural and artistic programs, in addition to traditional sports, can cater to a broader range of interests and talents among the youth. These activities should be designed to foster a sense of community, responsibility, and personal growth; and 7) Comprehensive community outreach initiatives to raise awareness about child rights and the risks associated with drug use.

Factors Affecting Reasonable Use of Force and Observance of Miranda Warning during Arrest by PNP Personnel

Author(s): Mark Anthony L. Refugio

Emilio Aguinaldo College

Abstract

The authority to use force, including lethal force is a defining feature of the police profession. The emergence and incorporation of the Miranda doctrine in our criminal law, and its attached misconceptions made it inevitable to determine the understandings of the Philippine law enforcers. There is a limited number of research studies conducted that are connected with the PNP. This implies demand studies centralizing on the use of reasonable force and observance of Miranda Warnings in effecting the arrest of suspected criminals. The study is a quantitative analysis of the relationship between the individual, situational, and organizational predictors to the use of reasonable force and observance of Miranda Warnings among PNP personnel particularly the Police Patrol Personnel assigned as Beat Patrol Personnel, Compact Personnel, and Arresting Officers, during police-civilian encounters. Utilizing Google survey forms as the primary tool to gather and evaluate data, the self-constructed survey to be utilized is anchored on the Deference Exchange Theory, Naturalistic Decision Making (NDM) approach, and the Police-Public Contact Survey (PPCS). The findings of this study imply that factors affecting the use of reasonable force and observance of Miranda warnings significantly influence the enhancement of law enforcement interventions. From the results of the study, it may be concluded that the factors affecting the use of reasonable force and observance of Miranda warnings are more likely to contribute interventions to the Philippine National Police, as an organization, a significant enhancement in law enforcement. Recommendations were proposed based on the findings and conclusion of this study. Based on the findings of this study, the following recommendations are proposed for the PNP leadership to provide written policy to be used as operational guidelines for all PNP personnel during the conduct of arrest of suspected criminals: (a) When conducting police operations and apprehending criminal suspects, male police officers shall use reasonable force; (b) Continuous education and training for law enforcement personnel; (c) Active aggression coupled with the present ability to carry out the threat or assault, which reasonably indicates that an assault or injury to a person appears imminent by crime suspects should be physically restrained with force”; (d) To be quick to use physical force in situations where the incident is critical and dangerous; (e) The arresting police officer informs the suspect that he/she has the right to remain silent”; and (f) The Arresting Police Officer informs.
